WHAT IS ABERMELIN OIL?
Abramelin Oil is a sacred anointing oil with origins in the biblical holy oil of Exodus, where olive oil was blended with resins and spices for consecration. Centuries later, The Book of the Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage adapted this formula into ceremonial magic, prescribing it for sanctifying tools, spaces, and the practitioner themselves in preparation for divine communion with the Holy Guardian Angel. The traditional blend—olive oil, myrrh, cinnamon, and galangal—carries symbolic layers of purity, sanctity, fire, and protection.
In the 19th century, Samuel MacGregor Mathers translated the Abramelin text and introduced the recipe into Western ceremonial magic-- while Aleister Crowley carried it further into Thelema, publishing his own variation heavy with cinnamon which was meant to "burn and fill the body with fire". From Thelema to the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and other ceremonial traditions, Abramelin Oil is applied to the brow, hands, or ritual instruments to invoke protection, divine alignment, and the sealing of magical intent. More than a simple blend of herbs and oils-- this sacred oil remains a sacred link between biblical consecration and living esoteric tradition.
